Six passengers sustained injuries when an Abuja-bound train derailed on Tuesday between Kubwa and Asham stations, the Nigerian Safety Investigation Bureau (NSIB) confirmed.
The train, operated by the Nigerian Railway Corporation (NRC), was carrying 618 people, including 583 passengers and 15 crew members, when several coaches veered off track.
Bimbo Oladeji, NSIB’s director of public affairs, said no fatalities were recorded:
“The derailment occurred at approximately 11:09 a.m. at KM 49. Six persons sustained injuries, and a go-team has been deployed to investigate. Our focus is to identify the direct and underlying causes to prevent a recurrence.”
NSIB director-general Alex Badeh sympathised with injured passengers and pledged a thorough probe:
“We will engage all relevant stakeholders to ensure accountability and implement necessary safety measures.”
The NRC has yet to comment on the cause of the accident.
