Recent data from the Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC) has shed light on the mobile subscriber landscape in November 2023, revealing that 9mobile experienced substantial customer losses, while MTN emerged as a net gainer.
According to the statistics released by the telecom regulator, a total of 2,433 mobile subscribers opted to switch networks in November. Among these, 1,646 customers, representing 68 per cent, departed from 9mobile to other networks.
While other operators also recorded outgoing porting, the numbers were relatively insignificant compared to 9mobile’s losses. MTN and Airtel each lost 274 customers, while Globacom recorded 239 outgoing porting.
In contrast, MTN, the largest operator by subscriber number, attracted more customers from other networks. Out of the 2,433 incoming ports reported in the month, MTN welcomed 1,470 customers from other networks.
Additionally, Airtel received 668 customers from other networks, while Globacom gained 211 customers through porting in the same period.
However, despite the significant customer losses, 9mobile only recorded a minimal number of incoming ports, with just 84 subscribers migrating to its network in November.
The movement of subscribers was facilitated by Mobile Number Portability (MNP), an initiative introduced by the telecoms regulator, allowing customers to switch service providers without changing their phone numbers.
The reasons behind subscriber porting vary, with factors such as service quality and promotional offers influencing decisions. While MNOs attribute the decline in porting numbers to improved service quality, the NCC suggests that subscribers may also switch networks to access cheaper call and data rates offered by competitors.
Former Executive Vice Chairman of NCC, Prof Umar Danbatta, highlighted the importance of Mobile Number Portability, emphasizing subscribers’ right to choose their preferred network based on their needs and preferences. He noted that Nigerian subscribers will continue to benefit from the flexibility offered by MNP, enabling them to switch networks seamlessly while retaining their original mobile numbers
