NNSG: Focus On The People, Country’s Survival Now Not 2023

The Nigerian National Summit Group (NNSG) has said that there is a need for politicians to worry more about the country and people they intend to lead in 2023 rather than zoning or power rotation.

Executive Secretary of the Group, Mr. Tony Uranta, while addressing the nation yesterday, said those who are concentrating on power issues in 2023 should concentrate more on Nigeria surviving as a nation beyond 2020.

“We are more worried about the existence of Nigeria beyond 2020 rather than who and where the president should come from in 2023,” Uranta said.

He expressed a fear that with what is playing out now in Nigeria and the level of insecurity nationwide, anything can happen to splinter the country.

According to him, “Nigeria may implode if equity, justice, and fairness continues to elude citizens. We as leaders should be more concerned about these issues that threaten the very fabrics of our existence,.

“2023 is far and near though. The first concern should be living beyond 2020 and addressing the core issues that will guarantee the nation’s survival, including security and agitations for balance in the system.

“The NNSG have always insisted on restructuring along regional lines. The restructuring will end agitations for balance and will allow regions to grow and develop at their pace,” he said.

Speaking on the zoning of the Presidency in 2023, he said every Nigerian has a choice to run for the office of the president as a constitutional right but that in fairness, based on an established rotational formula, it would be fair if political parties or major political contenders gave the slot to the Southeast.

“While this may not be constitutional, it is moral to give and allow fair sharing of power in the country to maintain peace.

“Presidency in Nigeria though, has always been zoned. However, our political class controls this arrangement and the movement of the goal post to suit them, this may make the 2023 president slot vision of the Southeast difficult to achieve.

On the security outfit ‘Amotekun’ initiated by Southwest governors, the NNSG scribe said there was need to sustain the tempo nationwide to assist in fighting the security breaches that might be the bane of the nation’s existence.
