Nigeria has given an approval for the construction of a 1,650-megawatt (MW) hydropower plant at a cost of $3 billion.

If the project is realised it would be recorded as one of the single biggest power projects in the country.

The project would be funded under a public private partnership arrangement and located in the north central state of Benue, Laolu Akande, spokesman to vice president Yemi Osinbanjo said in a statement.

Nigeria currently struggles with low power output and limited transmission infrastructure, leaving many households and businesses reliant on diesel-powered generators.
