Nigeria’s cyber security space is replete with potential even though there are high risk as a result of threats to the cyber security system by unscrupulous people.

It is because  of these threats  which  are estimated  to cost hundreds  of millions on the nation that experts in the sector gathered in Abuja  for a conference to brainstorm on how to consolidate the gains and move against  the threats in order to attain the target  of the Susustainable Development  Goals (SDGs).

The National Security Adviser (NSA) Mallam Nuhu Ribadu, who participated in the conference said that a sustainable cyber security system is critical to attaining the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) 2030 Agenda, stressing that the Nigerian government is making efforts to safeguard Nigeria’s cyber space from increasing attacks by criminals.

The just concluded 2-Day 2023 Cyber Secure Nigeria Conference, organised by Cyber Security Experts Association of Nigeria (CSEAN) in Abuja was themed: “Cybersecurity: A Digital Transformative Tool in Achieving Sustainable Development Goals.”

He noted that the government is trying to safeguard Nigeria’s cyber security space by amending the Cybercrimes Prohibition, Prevention Act 2015 etc, adding that the issue of Artificial intelligence (AI) and virtual assets are amongst other several critical inputs from stakeholders that are being considered in the amendment process.

Ribadu, who was represented at the occasion by manager, Nigeria Computer Emergency Response Team (ngCERT), Dr. Bala Fakandu, stated that the federal government considers cybersecurity incidence management and protection of Critical National Information Infrastructure (CNII) as a vital component of national development.

According to him, “The Presidential Order on the Designation and Protection on CNII currently awaiting Mr Presidential assent will enhance Nigeria’s current efforts for progressive economic prosperity, national development and the attainment of its national security objectives.”

This, he said, underscored the need for continuous cybersecurity awareness in the wake of increase in cyber threats from both states and non – state actors.

The NSA described the conference as one of the biggest cybersecurity events in all of Nigeria, adding that it is very educative, informative and its communiqué adds value to the system with realistic actionable items.

“In today’s interconnected world, where technology permeates every aspect of our lives, it is imperative that we recognise the crucial role cybersecurity plays in shaping our present and future.

“By ensuring the confidentiality, integrity, and availability of critical information systems, cybersecurity is an enabler for a better and more sustainable future. Over the years, Nigeria has made significant strides in the field of cybersecurity, demonstrating its commitment to safeguarding our digital infrastructure and promoting a secure cyberspace for all citizens.

“Our nation has witnessed remarkable achievements and successes in this domain, thanks to the combined efforts of government, private organisations and you the professionals,” he said.

However, the NSA pointed out that the threat landscape remains at an alarmingly heightened state, as bad actors continue their relentless onslaught even as he urged for more vigilance against the criminals.

Earlier in his welcome address, CSEAN President, Ade Soyinka, said the conference aimed to see how cybersecurity would underpin sustainability in attaining the SDG goals.

“What we are trying to do in this year’s conference is to see how cybersecurity underpins sustainability and sustainability we are talking about is the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals 2015.

“The Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) set forth a vision for the future that encompasses optimising the human experience and maximising the sustainable utilisation of our planet,” he said.
