Railway workers, under the auspices of the Nigeria Union of Railway Workers (NUR) said, they are embarking on thorough investigation on alleged sabotaging efforts by some staff of Nigeria Railways.

The union also appealed to members of the general public with genuine evidence to come out with such evidence in order to halt more involvement in sabotaging actions.

The  president of the union, Comrade Innocent Ajiji, who made this known to NATIONAL ECONOMY on Sunday, noted that, the union is greatly concerned with the way and manner some staff are allegedly cornering the proceeds of sales of Railway tickets into their private pockets despite the appeal by the management against such.

In different chat with NATIONAL ECONOMY,  the secretary general, Comrade Segun Esan, explained that the union is not happy with the way and manner some staff of the corporation are making frantic efforts to destroy the good plan of federal government through provision of the revived railway.

According to Esan, although some staff have already been dealt with following their collection of cash from passengers, the union in partnership with the management of NRC will fish out anyone involved in collection of cash from passengers rather than directing such passengers to ticket-issuing counters.

In further explanation, the duo said the law governing the railway operations has spelt out that any “passengers without tickets risk N20,000 fine and will be handed over to police for prosecution” even as the corporation has prepared ground for commencement of e-ticketing by October 23, 2023.

The investigation, according to Ajiji and Esan, became imperative following the renewed reports of about 15 passengers who were lured into payment of cash inside the train by some staff in apparent bid to rob the Railway of revenue. The passengers who were on journey from Ibadan to Lagos said they were surprised that some staff in railway uniform made them to pay cash on October 2, 2023.
