Nigerian Navy Intercepts Fishing Vessels for Illegal Fishing In Lagos Waters

The Western Naval Command of the Nigerian Navy has intercepted two vessels engaged in Illegal, Unreported, and Unregulated (IUU) fishing along the Badagry creeks in Lagos. The vessels, TAURARO and STARSHRIMPER 29, were licensed for shrimping but were found with large quantities of fish onboard.

This interception, part of Exercise EJA EXPRESSION, aligns with the Chief of the Naval Staff’s directive to promote effective ocean and maritime governance for a thriving Blue Economy. IUU fishing poses a global threat to ocean ecosystems, sustainable fishing, and economic security.

The Nigerian Navy emphasized its zero tolerance for any form of illegality at sea, urging perpetrators to desist from such acts. The exercise aimed to enhance personnel skills in enforcing fisheries laws, contributing to a thriving Blue Economy.
