Dr. Isa Pantami, the immediate past Minister of Communications and Digital Economy, has raised alarms over what he perceives as the insufficient use of the National Identification Number-SIM (NIN-SIM) database by Nigerian security forces in addressing the growing security threats, particularly the surge in kidnappings across the nation.
Pantami, a key architect of the policy mandating the linking of mobile SIM cards with National Identification Numbers (NIN), voiced his apprehensions as social media erupted with questions regarding the efficacy of the NIN-SIM policy, notably following the recent abduction of six girls in the Bwari Area Council of the Federal Capital Territory, Abuja.
In a statement shared on social media, Pantami defended the effectiveness of the NIN-SIM policy, stating, “NIN-SIM policy has been working. However, the relevant institutions fighting criminality are to be requested to ensure they utilize it effectively when a crime is committed. Lack of utilizing it is the main problem, not the policy.”
The former minister went on to provide insights into the successful implementation of the policy during his tenure, revealing, “While in office, I know three instances where the policy was utilized, and it led to the success of their operations,” he said.
Responding to queries about the apparent underutilization of the NIN-SIM database by security operatives, Pantami expressed his worry, stating, “On the lack of utilization, I am more worried than anyone, as my life was threatened by criminals for reintroducing it, including on BBC Hausa and national dailies, I resisted and ensured its implementation.”
Pantami underscored the sacrifices made for the implementation of the policy, expressing frustration over its perceived underuse, despite the challenges he faced.
He emphasized the crucial role of relevant institutions in leveraging the NIN-SIM database effectively to secure lives and property.
