Akindele’s “A Tribe Called Judah” Maintains Box Office Lead Despite Sales Dip

In a recent performance analysis, Funke Akindele’s Nollywood sensation, “A Tribe Called Judah,” witnessed a significant 55 per cent decline in ticket sales between January 12 and January 18, 2024.

During this period, the comedy-drama accumulated N84.6 million, marking a substantial downturn compared to the previous week.

Despite this setback, “A Tribe Called Judah” continues to dominate the Nigerian box office, securing the top spot for the fifth consecutive week. Impressively, the film has amassed a staggering N1,320,874,174, firmly establishing itself as Nigeria’s highest-grossing movie of 2023,’ it stated.

The report provides insights into the dynamic nature of audience preferences, showcasing the resilience of both “A Tribe Called Judah” and “Malaika,” another film holding the third spot despite facing a piracy leak. “Malaika” garnered N24.5 million in seven days, accumulating a total of N272,353,324 over four weeks in Nigerian cinemas.

Amid industry challenges, notably the ongoing battle against illegal dubbing, the success of these films in local and global markets emphasizes Nollywood’s enduring appeal and impact on the international stage.

Released on January 15, 2023, “A Tribe Called Judah” quickly ascended to become the highest-grossing movie of 2023. Achieving remarkable milestones, the film reached N800 million in ticket sales by the end of the year and surpassed the impressive N1 billion mark in January. Despite the recent decline in ticket sales, the film’s overall performance underscores its significance and lasting impact on the cinematic landscape.
