The National Action on Sugar Reduction (NASR), a coalition advocating for healthier lifestyles, has called upon the federal government to introduce increased taxes on sugar-sweetened beverages (SSBs) as part of efforts to alleviate the burden of obesity.
Omei Bongos-Ikwue, a representative of NASR, emphasized the importance of this measure during a rally held in Abuja to commemorate World Obesity Day on March 4, 2024.
“We urge the government to implement higher taxes on sugary drinks to protect more Nigerians from the risks of obesity, alleviate the burden on the healthcare system, and promote a healthier society,” stated Mr. Bongos-Ikwue.
He highlighted alarming statistics, indicating that one in eight people worldwide struggles with obesity, with 30 per cent of Nigerians being overweight and 15 per cent classified as obese.
Mr. Bongos-Ikwue underscored the World Health Organization’s (WHO) acknowledgment of the global obesity crisis, affecting over one billion people globally and posing significant health threats.
He pointed out that excessive calorie intake, particularly from sugar-sweetened beverages, contributes significantly to obesity and related health conditions such as heart disease, cancer, and type 2 diabetes.
The rally featured various awareness activities, including choreographed performances, interactive games, and distribution of informative materials, aimed at educating the public about the health risks associated with excessive sugar consumption.
