The federal government has given its nod to Air Peace to commence flights from Abuja to London, following the airline’s successful launch of direct flights from Lagos to London’s Gatwick Airport on March 30, 2024.
Minister of aviation, Festus Keyamo, highlighted that while Gatwick Airport serves as a starting point for Air Peace, Heathrow Airport remains the ultimate target.
He disclosed that authorisation for the Abuja-London route extension was granted on April 24.
The minister stressed the significance of Air Peace’s expansion, particularly in competing with British Airways, which also operates flights to Abuja. He noted that this move would benefit Nigerian travelers.
Responding to concerns about Heathrow Airport, Keyamo explained that while the British government has been cautious about permitting operations there, the federal government has agreed to commence operations at Gatwick Airport. However, he emphasised that Heathrow should be the preferred destination for Air Peace and other Nigerian airlines.
Keyamo clarified that Gatwick Airport is seen as a starting point, offering a relatively accessible opportunity. His decisions on airport choices will be guided by a review of the bilateral air service agreement between Nigeria and the United Kingdom.
Air Peace initiated its direct flights from Lagos to London’s Gatwick Airport on March 30, 2024.
Economy class tickets for the London route are priced at N1.2 million, with business class tickets at N4 million, as confirmed by Stanley Olisa, the airline’s spokesperson.
