In today’s rapidly evolving business landscape, driving growth requires optimum efficiency. This means understanding clear customer pain points and addressing them through easy and clear solutions that customers love. Technology companies in Nigeria have built innovative solutions for a wide range of user needs, especially in financial technology, work and HR industries, etc., and have gained widespread adoption. In Automotive technology, Mecho Autotech is one of such innovative technology companies in aftersales vehicle services.

At the helm of operations for Mecho Autotech, a Y combinator-backed technology startup in Nigeria,  co-founder and COO Asuelimen Godwin shares insights through his experience, particularly building technology products and driving a culture of operational excellence.

Strategic Alignment is Key

Godwin believes that the foundation of operational excellence lies in aligning operations with the company’s overall business strategy. “It all starts with understanding the company’s mission and long-term goals,” Godwin explains. “As COO, my job is translating those objectives into actionable operational plans.”

This involves setting clear key performance indicators (KPIs) and metrics that guide the entire organization. By ensuring that operations are directly tied to strategic goals, Godwin ensures Mecho Autotech stay on course, even in the face of unexpected challenges.

Process Optimization: The Heart of Efficiency

Godwin’s operational philosophy is a relentless focus on process optimization, primarily through automation. Streamlining workflows is essential for maintaining competitive advantage in a world where time is money and a growing adoption of remote work. “Process optimization is about eliminating inefficiencies, reducing waste, and ensuring that every step adds value. This begins with clear communication and alignment across all teams,” says Godwin. “It’s about doing more with less while maintaining the highest standards of quality.”

Godwin notes that it is essential to use technology to your advantage; implementing automation through internal or third-party tools is critical to simplify fragmented processes and improve responsibility and accountability. The move, which replaced a fragmented set of processes with a unified system, led to significant improvements in productivity and a renewed sense of ownership across teams.

Fostering a Culture of Continuous Improvement

However, Godwin’s approach extends beyond processes and systems. He strongly advocates fostering a culture of continuous improvement within the organization. “Continuous improvement is driven by a mindset that values feedback, innovation, and learning,” he notes.

Godwin emphasizes the importance of empowering employees to suggest changes and experiment with new approaches to achieve this. Regular training and development initiatives ensure that the team remains at the cutting edge of industry practices. By celebrating successes and learning from challenges, Godwin cultivates an environment where progress is an essential constant.

Balancing Efficiency with Product Growth and Innovation

One of the perennial challenges facing operators is balancing the need for operational efficiency with the demands of growth and innovation. Godwin is acutely aware of this tension and approaches it with a strategic mindset. “It’s about finding the sweet spot where you can scale operations without stifling creativity or slowing down innovation,” he explains.

Innovation is at the heart of product development. However, it’s important to innovate with purpose. I encourage my teams to think outside the box but always with the user in mind. We often explore emerging technologies and trends, but we carefully evaluate how they fit within our market and ecosystem and whether they add real value to our users.

Godwin’s strategy involves building flexible processes that adapt as the company grows. By ensuring synergy between the product and operational teams, he ensures that operational frameworks are robust enough to support, rather than hinder, the company’s growth ambitions.
