The Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC), has restated its commitment to ensuring the reduction of road traffic crashes in Rivers during the ‘Ember Months.’
FRSC sector commander in the state, Inyang Umoh, disclosed this while briefing journalists in Port Harcourt, on preparations for the launch of the 2024 ‘Ember Month’ safety campaign.
Umoh said, “Rivers Sector Command is ever committed to ensuring that this Ember Months witness drastic reduction in road traffic crashes state wide.
“This we would achieve through heightened and sustained robust public enlightenment and education, strict enforcement of traffic road laws and regulations, enhanced collaboration with critical stakeholders: traditional institutions, transport unions, the media.”
Describing road safety as a shared responsibility, the FRSC sector commander, called on passengers to speak out anytime they notice drivers committing traffic offences.
Umoh said, “These crashes happen due to speeding, overloading, wrongful overtaking, use of drugs, alcohol abuse while driving, distracted driving, use of worn out tyres. underage driver, driving against traffic, and general disobedience to traffic rules and regulations.
“Road Safety is shared responsibility, passengers must therefore speak out at any point in time they notice their drivers committing traffic infractions capable of putting their lives and that roads users in danger.
“Passengers and drivers have stay focus and be vigilant while on transit. Passengers must maintain high level of comportment so they not do distract the driver.
“Passengers have rights of safe trip from the points of departure to their different destinations. Passengers also have right not to be injured, killed, harassed, or have their rights violated.
“The corps is committed to ensuring that both drivers and passengers are equipped with the right information and knowledge on the best way of using our roads with a view to significantly reducing road traffic crashes, injuries and deaths.”
