A bill for a law to establish the Nasarawa State Agricultural Development Programme and Other Matters Connected Thereto has passed second reading at the state assembly.
The bill, according to the lawmakers, will repeal the Nasarawa Agricultural Development Programme Edit NO 13 of 1997.
The House Speaker, Danladi Jatau, announced the passage of the bill to second reading during the assembly plenary on Tuesday.
Jatau said that the bill, if passed into law, would boost agricultural activities and enhance food security and job creation and improve the standard of living of the people, especially the rural dwellers.
The speaker committed the bill to the House Committee on Agriculture to fine-tune it and report back to the house on April 8.
The House Minority Leader, Luka Zhekaba, who sponsored the bill, said that the eventual law would enhance revenue generation for farmers and the state government.
“If this bill sees the light of day, it will provide infrastructure such as roads and water, among others, as well as farm inputs for agricultural development,” he said.
He called on his colleagues to support the bill to scale through the second reading.
Mr Solomon Akwashiki, Dr Peter Akwe, Mohammed Isimbabi, Mr Esson Mairiga, Mr Daniel Ogazi and Mr Jacob Kudu, in their various contributions, supported the bill.
The lawmakers said that the bill, if finally passed, would also improve the standard of living of the people.
