Union Bank of Nigeria, in partnership with the Ajofa Foundation, has taken significant steps towards promoting inclusive education by providing learners with hearing impairments an opportunity to demonstrate their academic skills and intellectual potential.

As part of its commitment through UnionCares, the Bank sponsored the Ajofa Special Education Foundation for the Deaf Mathematics Competition in Lagos, themed: ‘Impacting Deaf Students and Life with Mathematics in Nigeria.’ This initiative aims to bridge educational gaps and support talented individuals within the deaf community.

The competition gathered representatives from Union Bank, the Lagos State Education Board, school principals, and educators, drawing participation from ten competitors selected from various schools in Lagos, including those for the hearing impaired.

The chief brand and marketing officer of Union Bank, Olufunmilola Aluko stated, “At Union Bank, we firmly believe that development must be inclusive. Our UnionCares initiative reflects our dedication to fostering valuable partnerships and platforms like this one.”

She said, “Today’s participants have showcased that their circumstances do not determine their potential. They are redefining narratives, demonstrating that disability is not inability. They embody the qualities of mathematicians, thinkers, and problem-solvers whose insights can positively transform the world.”

A representative of the Lagos State Education Authority, Bukunola Famakinwa, highlighted the crucial importance of the initiative for deaf learners and the broader community.
