Delta Govt Vows To Keep Investing In Tertiary Institutions

Delta State government has vowed to keep investing in education in terms of infrastructural development and approval of key courses to boost the status of tertiary institutions.

Delta State commissioner for tertiary education, Prof Nyerhovwo Tonukari, stated while addressing the issue of the shortage of lecturers, which is affecting several tertiary institutions across the country.

While disclosing that the Governor Oborevwori-led administration has employed no fewer than 600 persons across the state tertiary institutions, he said the government still plan to employ more persons going forward,” he said.

“In the past two years of the Oborevwori administration, we have employed over 600 academic and non-academic staff in our tertiary institutions, and we still plan to employ more persons going forward.

“For the 2025 Budget, Education was the second highest. I believe this states how much the governor is willing to invest in education.
“Governor Oborevwori has the vision that state universities should be able to accommodate every individual who wants to pursue a degree and should be encouraged to do so,” he said.

He urged tertiary students in the state to leverage the Nigerian Education Loan Fund (NELFUND) to ease the burden involved in the payment of tuition.
He then urged students in the state to apply for the NELFUND, a federal government scheme aimed at easing the payment of tuition for students across the country.

He disclosed that the student union in the state is fully behind Governor Sheriff Oborevwori for the second term as a result of his keen interest in tertiary education.

“The students are happy with the governor and the support he has accorded students through the student’s bursary as well as expanding what he inherited in terms of infrastructural in our tertiary institutions.”

He disclosed that despite the high cost of funding, the eight tertiary institutions across the state, Governor Sheriff Oborevwori-led administration has continued to keep faith with ensuring academic and non-academic staffs receive their salaries and arrears as at when due, stating that we are funding our tertiary institutions properly to prevent our lecturers from going on strike.
