The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) says 69,376 Nigerians completed online voter pre-registration within the first seven hours of reopening the Continuous Voter Registration (CVR) nationwide on Monday.

INEC national commissioner and chairman of information and voter education, Sam Olumekun, said the portal went live at 8:30 a.m., and by 3:30 p.m., tens of thousands had already registered.

Breakdown of registrants showed 33,803 males (48.7 per cent), 35,573 females (51.3 per cent), and 48,033 young persons aged 18–34 years (69.2 per cent).

“The portal is available 24 hours daily at INEC website, Olumekun said, adding that in-person registration would commence on August 25 across 811 INEC offices nationwide.

He explained that both online and physical registration would run concurrently, catering to citizens who prefer in-person enrollment and those completing online pre-registration.

Registrants must still book biometric capture appointments, after which INEC issues a Temporary Voter Card, later exchanged for a Permanent Voter Card.

Olumekun stressed that the CVR is strictly for citizens aged 18 and above who have not registered before. “Double registration is unlawful,” he warned.

INEC also said it would publish weekly updates by state, gender, age, occupation, and disability to keep the public informed.
