Kano State Governor Abba Yusuf has authorised the payment of more than ₦5.6 billion in gratuities to 1,198 former councillors who served between 2018 and 2020 across the state’s 44 local government areas.
Speaking at the Government House in Kano, Yusuf said the intervention underscores his administration’s commitment to workers’ welfare and social justice, adding that the payout was designed to ease the financial burden on former councillors who played vital roles in grassroots governance.
The governor pledged continued focus on policies that improve citizens’ well-being and strengthen public confidence in government.
Several beneficiaries, who confirmed receipt of their payments, lauded the move as a sign of responsive leadership. Former councillors from Doguwa, Kabo, and Fagge LGAs described the gesture as timely relief after years of stalled entitlements.
One of them, Malam Abdullahi Haruna of Kabo LGA, said the development restored faith in government commitments. Another, Malam Musa Ibrahim of Doguwa LGA, said the payment had “added value” to his life and family.
The ₦5.6 billion disbursement is among the largest single gratuity settlements by the Kano State Government in recent years and signals a policy shift towards clearing outstanding obligations to former public officials.
