AMAC Chairman Suspends Radio, TV Taxes on Residential Houses After Public Outcry

The Chairman of Abuja Municipal Area Council (AMAC), Mr. Christopher Maikalangu, has ordered the immediate withdrawal of the radio and television tax on residential houses within the council area.

The decision follows public outcry from residents who expressed dissatisfaction over the levy.

Mr. Kingsley Madaki, Senior Special Assistant on Media and Public Affairs to the Chairman, disclosed this in a statement issued on Friday in Abuja.

Maikalangu announced the directive at the AMAC headquarters, stressing his administration’s commitment to responsive governance and ensuring that policies reflect the welfare and needs of residents.

He explained that the initial rollout of the radio and TV tax was aimed at generating revenue for developmental projects, including the provision of basic amenities, infrastructure, and community improvements.

However, he acknowledged that the timing and implementation of the tax required broader stakeholder engagement and adequate publicity.

In response to the feedback, the chairman instructed the council’s revenue department to suspend all collections and withdraw any demand notices already issued to residents.

He further directed a comprehensive review of the policy to ensure transparency and fairness.

Going forward, the council will limit the application of the radio and television taxes to commercial establishments such as hotels, restaurants, and business premises where the levy can be justified as a contribution to service delivery.

Maikalangu reaffirmed his administration’s commitment to fostering a conducive environment for residents and businesses, urging the public to continue engaging constructively on issues that affect them.

“The council will release detailed guidelines on the revised tax policy through official platforms, including the council’s website, social media, and community town-hall meetings, to ensure clarity and avoid misunderstandings,” he said.

He thanked residents for their constructive engagement and assured them that the council remains committed to delivering quality services anchored on fairness, accountability, and sustainable development.
