The All Progressives Congress (APC) and other stakeholders in Enugu State have applauded Governor Peter Mbah for earmarking 33.3% of the state’s N1.62 trillion 2026 budget to the education sector — the highest in the state’s history.
The appropriation bill, tagged “Budget of Renewed Momentum with Renewed Optimism,” was presented to the Enugu State House of Assembly on Tuesday.
APC Acting Chairman, Dr Ben Nwoye, praised the education-heavy allocation, describing it as a strategic investment in human capital that could transform the state’s economic landscape. He also highlighted ongoing strides in tourism, aviation expansion, healthcare renewal and security, including the recent launch of surveillance drones.
“Everyone is happy. We have seen a new Enugu emerging,” Nwoye said, while commending President Bola Tinubu for increased federal allocations that strengthened state finances.
Chairman of Nsukka LGA, Mr Jude Asogwa, described the budget as realistic and well-structured, noting that Mbah again proposed no borrowing, instead outlining clear revenue sources. He highlighted the launch of 181 roads in 2025 and the governor’s plan to commence 1,200 more in 2026.
Igbo-Etiti LGA Chairman, Dr Eric Odoh, said Mbah had “raised the bar of leadership,” adding that the state’s development trajectory across agriculture, education, health and infrastructure was unprecedented.
Stakeholders agreed that if sustained, the administration’s reforms could reposition Enugu as one of Nigeria’s fastest-rising subnational economies.
