Power Customers Pay N191.86bn As DisCos’ June Bills Hit N240.71bn

Electricity customers paid N191.86 billion to Distribution Companies (DisCos) in June, out of N240.71 billion billed for electricity supplied during the month, according to the Nigerian Electricity Regulatory Commission (NERC).
The Commission disclosed this in its June Commercial Performance of Distribution Companies Fact Sheet, which showed that the 11 DisCos recorded a decline in revenue collection compared with the previous month.
The DisCos collected N191.86 billion in June, down from N208.15 billion recorded in May, representing a decrease of N16.29 billion.
NERC said the DisCos received electricity worth N315.73 billion during the month but billed customers N240.71 billion, leaving a gap of N75.02 billion between the value of energy received and the amount billed.
The commission said billing efficiency fell to 76.24 per cent in June from 76.87 per cent in May.
Similarly, the 11 DisCos recorded a collection efficiency of 79.71 per cent, representing a 2.61 percentage-point decline from 82.32 per cent recorded in May.
NERC said the industry recorded an overall recovery efficiency of 74.24 per cent, with an average actual collection of N96.63 per kilowatt-hour (kWh), compared with an allowed average tariff of N130.15/kWh.
Kano DisCo recorded the highest billing efficiency at 84.96 per cent, followed by Eko DisCo at 83.02 per cent and Port Harcourt DisCo at 80.78 per cent.
Yola DisCo recorded the lowest billing efficiency at 67.12 per cent.
In revenue collection efficiency, Benin DisCo led with 94 per cent, followed by Ikeja DisCo at 89 per cent and Eko DisCo at 88.64 per cent.
Kano DisCo recorded the lowest recovery efficiency at 42.16 per cent, while Kaduna and Jos DisCos posted 46.13 per cent and 55.18 per cent, respectively.
On revenue recovery, Eko DisCo ranked first with 87.04 per cent, followed by Port Harcourt DisCo at 86.33 per cent and Benin DisCo at 82.23 per cent.
Kaduna DisCo recorded the weakest collection efficiency at 37.03 per cent, while Kano and Jos DisCos posted 44.04 per cent and 51.33 per cent, respectively.
