The Nigerian Independent System Operator (NISO) has attributed the recent decline in electricity generation on the national grid to inadequate gas supply to thermal power plants and falling water levels at hydroelectric stations.
The operator said the constraints had reduced available power generation and electricity allocations to Distribution Companies (DisCos), resulting in shorter hours of electricity supply and increased load shedding across distribution networks.
NISO disclosed this in a statement on Thursday, explaining that insufficient gas supply had prevented some thermal power plants from operating at full capacity, while declining water inflows into reservoirs had weakened output from hydroelectric facilities.
It said the combined effect of the challenges had reduced the volume of electricity available for distribution to consumers across the country.
According to the operator, the impact varies among DisCos, depending on available generation and the electricity allocations received by each distribution company.
NISO acknowledged the hardship caused by the situation, expressing appreciation for concerns raised by electricity consumers and other stakeholders.
The system operator said it was pursuing efforts to diversify the energy mix of the national grid as part of measures to strengthen electricity supply security and reduce vulnerability to prevailing operational challenges.
It also reaffirmed its commitment to maintaining grid stability, optimising the dispatch of available generation and ensuring the secure, reliable and efficient operation of the national electricity grid.
