In a bid to enhance construction standards and stimulate economic growth, the Abia State Executive Council has given the green light for the establishment of a Standard Materials Testing Laboratory in Umuahia.
The laboratory, set to address the recurrent issue of building collapses, will conduct rigorous testing on construction materials, covering soil, reinforcement rods, aggregate materials, and asphalt quality.
Mr. Kingsley Agomuoh, General Manager of Umuahia Capital Development Authority (UCDA), emphasized the laboratory’s role in ensuring that all construction projects, including buildings, roads, and bridges, meet the required standards.
This move is a response to the prevalent use of sub-standard materials in construction, and the laboratory is poised to become a mandatory checkpoint for construction approvals.
In parallel efforts, the state government has commenced the remodeling of markets to optimize their functionality, eliminate touting, and curtail multiple taxation.
Prince Okey Kanu, the Commissioner for Information and Culture, outlined the government’s commitment to removing illegal gates around towns and cities, enhancing traffic flow, and enforcing compliance with regulations.
The state government also unveiled plans to revitalize moribund industries, aiming to create job opportunities and bolster the state’s revenue.
Prince Kanu assured that steps are being taken to streamline the tax payment system, preventing multiple taxation through the efforts of a dedicated technical committee.
Highlighting the strides made in improving the ease of doing business in Abia, Prince Kanu cited enhanced security, massive infrastructure development, and an improved position on the ease of doing business index.
Efforts to combat touting are underway through a specialized task force operating in Aba, Umuahia, and other parts of the state.
Dr. Chimezie Ukaegbu, Commissioner for Commerce, Trade, and Industry, underscored the administration’s commitment to providing a conducive business environment. Reforms have streamlined business registration processes, and the administration has prioritized security to attract investors.
The multifaceted approach adopted by Abia State aims to foster economic growth, ensure regulatory compliance, and create a business-friendly environment for residents and investors alike.
