Spanish Football Chief, Javier Tabas, has stated that, one of the world soccer greats, Lionel Messi, ‘made a monumental mistake leaving Barcelona FC at the time he did, as such move has showed in all characters that it was poorly timed.

Javier has noted that, the Argentina and PSG icon will one day return to Spain in a playing capacity that would restore his iconic status.

He said: “Lionel Messi made a ‘mistake’ leaving Barcelona for Paris Saint Germain in the summer of 2021.

Amid worsening economic conditions for the Catalan club, Messi departed Barcelona after two decades for Paris with a new contract not possible.

Having joined the French club on an initial two-year deal, speculation has ramped up in recent weeks surrounding Messi’s next move.

Asked about the possibility of his return to Spain, Tebas welcomed the potential move – but added that he felt there was some error on the part of Messi himself in leaving on a free transfer last year.

I don’t know if Messi will have one last show at Barca, that will depend on him. Hopefully he will come back,’ Tebas said, speaking to the Web Summit in Lisbon.

‘Above all, it would also be good for him to return to Spanish football, especially to get the team that was the side that saw him grow.’

However, with the Argentine seemingly close to the peak of his powers having enjoyed a stellar start to the campaign with PSG, having scored 12 goals and assisted a further 14 in all competitions so far, it has been suggested that his level still remains someway above that of the MLS.

Messi himself has remained tight-lipped on his future, choosing instead to focus on what is likely to be his last ever World Cup.

It has been reported in France that the Argentine could yet activate an ‘Argentina clause’ in his contract that would relieve him from his duties with PSG two weeks out from the start of the tournament.

Reporter Gaston Edul claimed that the clause – which can be vetoed by Christoph Galtier, the PSG boss – allows the player to prioritise international commitments over those of his club side.

Argentina are bidding to win their first World Cup since 1986, having competed in two finals (1990 and 2014) since then.

It has been speculated that Messi, 35, could move to the United States to join David Beckham’s Inter Miami.

However, with the Argentine seemingly close to the peak of his powers having enjoyed a stellar start to the campaign with PSG, having scored 12 goals and assisted a further 14 in all competitions so far, it has been suggested that his level still remains someway above that of the MLS.
