CASIO Middle East and Africa FZE, the regional subsidiary of CASIO Computer Co. Ltd, the leading education technology company, has received special recognition at the Lagos State Educational Conference 2023 for its outstanding contribution to the development of education in Lagos State.
The recognition follows CASIO’s successful implementation of the CASIO Model School Project, a groundbreaking study in collaboration with the Lagos State Ministry of Education, which featured six secondary schools and two distinct groups of students: an experimental and control group.
The findings from the Model School Project underscored the crucial role of scientific calculators in mathematics education and demonstrated that by incorporating these tools into mathematics lessons, students experience a reduction in computational errors and an increase in conceptual understanding, ultimately leading to improved procedural fluency in mathematics.
Speaking on the Lagos State Ministry of Education’s collaboration with CASIO, the commissioner, Mrs. Folasade Adefisayo, said, “The partnership has been fruitful for us because our WAEC results went up almost three times over the period we are talking about. More students are passing mathematics, and we attribute some of that to the quality of training the teachers received because it’s not just training on the use of calculators but training on making the classroom an engaging environment.”
CASIO also received plaudits for the establishment of the CASIO Lab, a cutting-edge Mathematics and Science Training Centre, fully equipped with cameras, projectors, calculators, tablets, and computers. CASIO Lab serves as a training center for teachers as well as a resource center for the Ministry of Education to create live video sessions on different subjects for subsequent broadcasting to teachers and students.
To date, over 2000 teachers have been trained in the CASIO Lab. The interactive sessions and workshops provided valuable insights into incorporating scientific calculators into math lessons, leading to improved student performance and a deeper conceptual understanding of mathematics.
“CASIO’s groundbreaking initiatives stem from the company’s core philosophy of fostering creativity, curiosity, and positive societal impact,” said CASIO Managing Director, Takashi Seimiya. “These comprehensive programs not only equip teachers across Nigeria with the necessary skills to effectively integrate CASIO technology into their classroom instruction but also make learning easier and enjoyable for their students.”
CASIO remains committed to nurturing academic excellence and empowering students to unlock their full potential. “The next step is to train more teachers on inquiry-based learning with the usage of CASIO scientific calculators in 6 districts in Lagos. It is imperative that students have access to authentic CASIO calculators, which not only provide accurate and reliable results but also foster trust between teachers and students. Through our continued collaboration with the Lagos State Ministry of Education, CASIO aims to inspire a generation of young, confident problem solvers in Nigeria, equipped with the necessary skills to thrive and succeed on a global scale,” Takashi Seimiya concluded.
The event, aimed at exploring the opportunities in public-private partnerships for the continued development of education in Nigeria, was attended by key stakeholders in education, including Mr. Andrew Adejo, Permanent Secretary of the Federal Ministry of Education; Mrs. Folashade Omobola Adefisayo, Commissioner of Education Lagos State; Mrs. Solape Hammond, Special Adviser to Lagos State Governor on the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) and Investments; Mrs. Frances Iweha-Onukwu, West African Examinations Council Senior Deputy Registrar; and other dignitaries from the Lagos State Ministry of Education, Model School Project teachers, and members of the media.
