Industry stakeholders have emphasised the urgent need for robust data protection and cybersecurity frameworks to safeguard sensitive information and enhance digital resilience.
This call was made during the 12th edition of the Nigeria ICT Impact CEO Forum (NIICF) held over the weekend, themed ‘Strengthening Data Protection, Cloud Infrastructure & Cybersecurity.’
The CEO of Digital Reality, Ike Nnamani, highlighted the critical link between data localisation and cybersecurity. “While exploring local hosting solutions, robust cybersecurity is non-negotiable. Without proper safeguards, mandating data localisation could expose sensitive information to significant risks. Open discussions on infrastructure and policy are essential for managing critical sovereign data securely,” he stated.
Nnamani advocated a government-led initiative to bolster the digital ecosystem, calling for comprehensive cybersecurity frameworks, incentives for businesses to adopt advanced security measures, and increased investment in research and development. Strengthening local hosting requires the government’s active support to ensure the protection of critical data, he added.
CEO of Net Access Systems Limited, Lekan Balogun, emphasised the importance of securing cloud infrastructure and implementing stringent data protection policies amidst rising cyber threats. He also stressed the role of skilled professionals in combating cybersecurity challenges, urging the development of internship programs and management training to retain and empower talent.
CEO of VDT Communications, Abiodun Omoniyi, reaffirmed his company’s dedication to providing secure and innovative digital solutions while highlighting the importance of collaboration and investment in digital infrastructure to fortify Africa’s resilience against cyber threats. Building a robust digital future for Africa requires enhanced data privacy measures and strengthened cybersecurity frameworks, Omoniyi stated.
Publisher and coordinator of NIICF, Tayo Adewusi, emphasised the significance of data governance in today’s digital age, stressing compliance with regulations like GDPR and CCPA and advocated for secure cloud partnerships and comprehensive cybersecurity strategies, including threat detection systems, incident response plans, and employee training programs.
