The Permanent Secretary Federal Ministry of Communications and Digital Economy Mr. Musa Istifanus, on behalf of the Federal government has inaugurated a Ministerial Committee for the World Telecommunication and Information Society Day (WTISD-20) celebration to be held 17th of May 2020.

The Committee’s members were drawn from the Ministry of Communications and Digital Economy, Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC), National Information Technology Development Agency (NITDA), Galaxy Backbone, Nigerian Communication Satellite (NIGCOMSAT) and Nigerian Postal Services (NIPOST).

Addressing the Committee members at the Ministry’s headquarters in Abuja recently, the Permanent Secretary pointed out that Information Communication Technology (ICT) was the backbone of the society and urged the committee to ensure that this year’s celebration shows the society what telecommunication has brought to the fore in the ICT sector.

He noted that the inability of society to introduce technology into the way of doing things had led to everybody scrambling for the scarce resources in the country.

Istifanus pointed out that the WTISD-19 review should actually reveal performance in the previous year, what was achieved in addition to performance, and contribution of technology in the sector.

In his words “when you review your past mistakes, you must realize where you are heading to as well as plan toward that direction, which would definitely enhance the huge success of WTISD-20 celebration”.

He frowned at the inability of the departments and agencies to nominate more women as members of the committee. “It is necessary that in any committee we should try to integrate more women, we should purposely nominate them to bridge the gap and build confidence in them” Istifanus stressed.

World Telecommunication and Information Society Day (WTISD-20) event is being celebrated globally by all International Communication Union (ITU) member administration on the 17th May annually, which is the  founding day of the Union in 1865, this year theme is “Connect 2030: ICTs for Sustainable Development Goals”.
