Minister of Agriculture and Food Security, Senator Abubakar Kyari, announced a significant development on Monday, revealing that the federal government has sealed a €995 million agreement with the Brazilian Government and the German Deutsch Bank Group.
The deal is set to finance the Green Imperative Programme in Nigeria, aimed at bolstering food security across the nation.
Speaking from Minna, Niger State, Kyari disclosed that the programme’s primary objective is to establish mechanization hubs in each of Nigeria’s 774 local government areas. As part of the initiative’s implementation strategy, a memorandum of understanding was inked between the federal government and the John Deere Group, a subsidiary of Tata Equipment.
Under this agreement, the manufacturer is committed to supplying 10,000 units of tractors and implements over the course of five years, with deliveries slated in tranches of 2,000 units annually.
Kyari emphasized that the Greener Hope Initiative is yet another pivotal platform deployed by the government to reshape the agricultural mechanization landscape in Nigeria, ultimately aiming to alleviate existing deficits.
President Bola Tinubu echoed this commitment during the Food Security and Agricultural Mechanization Programme held in Niger State.
He reiterated his administration’s dedication to achieving food sufficiency while safeguarding local industries to foster sustainable economic growth.
Tinubu underscored the importance of deploying advanced agricultural machinery and technology to drive large-scale agro-value chain development within the state.
Acknowledging the leadership and commitment demonstrated, President Tinubu emphasized the imperative of addressing challenges to transform Nigeria into an economy of opportunities.
He stressed the need to prioritize the welfare of the people and reorient the nation towards a collective goal, envisioning a Nigeria where all students can be adequately nourished through locally produced food
