The federal government has outlined visionary plans to revolutionize the NYSC, steering it towards becoming a revenue-generating entity.
This ambitious initiative was disclosed by Minister Jamila Bio-Ibrahim during a recent appearance on Channels Television’s Sunday Politics program.
Responding to inquiries about potential increases in the monthly allowances for corps members, Minister Bio-Ibrahim acknowledged the financial constraints exacerbated by dwindling resources. She affirmed the government’s commitment to innovative solutions that prioritize the welfare of the corps members.
The envisaged reforms extend beyond monetary considerations, with the NYSC set to undergo a holistic transformation. The objective is to evolve from being solely a social program to becoming a self-sustaining agency. This strategic shift aims to equip corps members with skills aligned with current market demands, providing avenues for gainful employment or encouraging entrepreneurship.
As part of the comprehensive approach, the reforms will enhance the matching process for primary assignments, ensuring a more seamless integration into chosen career paths. The government is poised to offer robust support structures to guide corps members throughout their professional journeys.
Moreover, Minister Bio-Ibrahim highlighted an immediate intervention in response to heightened security concerns.
To ensure the safety and well-being of participants, the minister said the NYSC has ceased posting corps members to states deemed unsafe, reflecting the government’s commitment to prioritizing security in the program.
