Sustainability In Workplace: Strategies For Organisations To Go Green

Human resource operations contribute significantly to the success of an organisation.
Every organisation, large or small, uses a variety of capital to make the business work. No matter the industry, all companies have one thing in common: they must have people to make their capital work for them. This is the area the skill of Human resource management is needed in helping generating of revenue through the use of people’s skills and abilities.
Human resource management (HRM) can be defined as the effective management of people in an organisation. HR management helps bridge the gap between employees’ performance and the organisation’s strategic objectives. Moreover, an efficient HR management team can give firms an edge over their competition.
A business management expert, Dr Timi Olubiyi, said human resources is important to organisations in myriad areas, ranging from strategic planning to company image.
“HR management helps in bridging the gap between employees’ performance and how the organisation achieve their initial objectives. We can say human resources are the people involved in a business or organisation, regarded as a significant asset in terms of skills and abilities. Human resource management is therefore the effective management of the people in an organisation.
“An effective HR management can give firms an edge over the competition, because these HR managers are responsible for everything relating to human beings, and human beings form a huge percentage of a company’s success,” he said.
Benefits of HR development, Olubiyi said, “Effective HR development programs provide support for current and future employee development. This ensures organisational effectiveness by ensuring that employees get new employee orientation, performance support to complete tasks successfully and formal education to improve productivity.
“HR personnel analyse employee needs, design and develop or purchase relevant training courses, implement support systems and evaluate the effectiveness and business impact of learning solutions. HR development professionals enable continued success. HR development programs also help organizations comply with local, state and federal regulations.”
Important Functions Of Human Resources
Depending on the size of the company, an HR professional might perform one or several of the key functions of human resources outlined in the list below:
Recruiting, hiring and retaining talent; Talent acquisition is one of the more well-known functions of any HR department. Making sure the workforce capabilities and performance match organisational goals is crucial for the health of the company. HR managers are usually in charge of performing background checks, onboarding new employees and explaining payroll, benefits and company policies. They also partially responsible for employee retention, which is often overlooked in the discussion around talent acquisition.
Employee engagement: The importance of setting up two-way dialogue and engagement between employees and HR or senior leadership cannot be overstated. It is the only way to build and maintain a vibrant company culture, one where everyone is united around shared goals, mission and values. Encouraging employees to discuss concerns or report a situation ensures that problems can be worked through as soon as possible, instead of snowballing into a potentially damaging situation.
Performance management: Performance management is the process of maintaining or improving job performance. Typically, this is done through the use of assessment tools, coaching and counseling, and providing continuous feedback.
Compensation and benefits: Calculating fair compensation rates and putting together a comprehensive list of benefits is another big part of an HR manager’s job. The goal is to create a competitive and attractive offer that aligns with the candidate’s experience and expectations.
Development and training: Offering ample opportunities for individuals to learn new skills and further improve their existing talents is advantageous to the company and employees alike.
Risk management: Another key function of human resources is identifying, assessing and resolving short- and long-term risks before they become a real threat. This serves to protect both the employees and the company.
Audits and legal compliance: The laws on matters such as labor, benefits, fair compensation, hiring and firing are complex. They also vary by state and are subject to change periodically. Knowing and following state, federal and local regulations is necessary for the success of any organisation.
Professionals in this sector are integral to the success of organisations and their employees.
