The Kano State Government has approved plans to acquire majority shares in the Kano Electricity Distribution Company (KEDCO) as part of its strategy to enhance energy supply and drive industrial development across the state.
Governor Abba Yusuf disclosed this through his spokesperson, Sunusi Bature, in a statement issued on Monday in Kano.
According to Bature, the approval was granted during the 33rd Executive Council meeting presided over by the governor, where several key infrastructure and development initiatives were also ratified.
He said the acquisition move was designed to give the state a stronger stake in electricity generation, transmission, and distribution, thereby improving efficiency, accountability, and service delivery within the power sector.
“The decision reflects our commitment to strengthening energy access as a catalyst for economic growth, industrialisation, and job creation,” Bature said.
He added that the state government had also adopted the Kano State Electricity Policy, which provides a roadmap for sustainable energy development, renewable power integration, and private sector participation.
Bature noted that improved power supply would boost the confidence of investors, enhance manufacturing capacity, and support small and medium-scale enterprises in the state.
In a related development, the council also approved the construction of 50 low-cost housing estates across the 36 local government areas outside the Kano metropolis.
The project, aimed at bridging the state’s housing deficit, is expected to provide affordable accommodation for low- and middle-income earners while promoting inclusive development.
According to the statement, the housing estates will be equipped with essential infrastructure such as access roads, electricity, and potable water supply.
“The initiative will stimulate local economies, create employment opportunities, and provide decent living conditions for families across both urban and rural communities,” Bature added.
The twin initiatives — energy and housing — reflect the Yusuf administration’s broader agenda to promote economic diversification, infrastructure renewal, and human development in Kano State.
