Kano State Governor, Abba Kabir Yusuf, on Wednesday presented a proposed N1.36 trillion budget for the 2026 fiscal year to the State House of Assembly, with Education receiving the single largest allocation.
Tagged “Budget of Infrastructure, Inclusive Growth and Sustainable Development,” the proposal outlines the administration’s plan to consolidate ongoing projects and accelerate growth across strategic sectors.
Yusuf said the spending plan—comprising N934.64 billion for capital expenditure (68%) and N433.48 billion for recurrent expenditure (32%)—reflects his administration’s decision to prioritise long-term investments capable of driving economic expansion.
According to him, the Economic and Social sectors dominate the capital vote, with Education, Health and Infrastructure emerging as top beneficiaries. Education alone received N405.35 billion (30%), followed by Health with N212.25 billion (16%) and Infrastructure with N346.28 billion (25%).
The governor said the allocations highlight Kano’s commitment to human capital development, improved service delivery and sustainable development outcomes. Other key sectors—including Agriculture, Water, Security, Commerce, Investment Promotion, Women and Youth Development, Tourism, Environment, Climate Change, and Transport—also received substantial provisions.
Yusuf noted that his administration had already implemented over 80 per cent of its development blueprint, adding that the 2026 proposal aims to deepen ongoing reforms as the government approaches the third quarter of its four-year mandate.
Describing the proposal as “a covenant with the people,” he said it was bold yet realistic, designed to position Kano as a resilient and inclusive economy. He urged lawmakers to ensure timely passage of the Appropriation Bill to maintain the state’s commitment to a January–December budget cycle.
The governor commended the Assembly for its cooperation since the beginning of his tenure and acknowledged the input of ministries, development partners and civil society organisations in preparing the budget document. He reaffirmed his commitment to transparent and accountable governance.
Speaker of the House, Alhaji Jibrin Falgore, assured the governor of the legislature’s readiness to accelerate consideration of the proposal. He praised the administration’s “remarkable strides” in infrastructure development, education, healthcare and security, and pledged continued collaboration to ensure completion of ongoing projects and adequate funding for new initiatives.
Yusuf thereafter formally laid the 2026 Appropriation Bill before the House for legislative consideration.
