Organised labour, under the aegis of the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) mobilised and picketed Spring Feed Company, Itamaga, Ikorodu over unsafe workplace environment.

The chairman, NLC, Lagos council, Comrade Funmi Agnes Sesi, while speaking during the picketing said the purpose of the picketing is to use this Spring Feed Company as deterrent to other firms who have been undulging under the cover of inactive government regulatory activities on killer company.

“Starting from now, we are going to set up inspectorate arm that would be out through investigative committee to embark on visit to companies who have converted their workplaces to death environment since government has failed in its constitutional responsibilities to create conducive and safety environment for decent work and checkmate abusive dehuman firms,” he said.

The NLC chairman said, “We want to use this means to push for a reasonable compensation for the amputated worker, Adekunle Shokunbi,  whose right hand was amputed by machine while doing his lawful duties in the company. Since the incidence, the company refused to come out with adequate compensation for the man.

“The information we got is that there has never been any preventive tool to safeguard lives of workers in the company. The innocent boy was said to have gone as usual to remove the feeds from the machine when the machine was switched off.

“But while he was doing the offloading, a co-worker went to put on the machine despite the warning. Because of lack of preventive messure in place, the boy’s hand was cut off.”
