The Nigerian music industry is beehives of stars, who are waiting to be unraveled. One of such is Lawrence Bikom Otu who is better known in the music industry as Madcook.
The artist’s interest in music ignited while he was growing up in Lagos, Nigeria. In the last half a decade, he has churned out singles that have gathered impressive rotations and spin on media houses and clubs.
His latest song “Raba,” is an addition to his ever-growing discography. The four-minute, one-second track is helmed by a mid-tempo guitar, shakers, and soft drum. MacBook’s lovely vocals easily flow along with the track’s leisurely feeling, as he asks his better half some poignant questions lovers tend to ask.
“Raba’’ explores themes of love, trust, and vulnerability through its heartfelt lyrics and captivating melody. Madcook’s delivery and emotional performance add depth and authenticity to the song, making it relatable to listeners. Lyrically, “Raba,” finds Madcook on an inquisitive voyage with too many questions scattered around. The chorus, with its repetition of “If to say the raba been no dey, Shey you for dey?(If there was no money, would you stay?)’’ emphasizes the significance of material wealth in a relationship. The use of the term “Raba,” which is Nigerian slang for money, adds a cultural touch and further enhances the song’s authenticity.
The lyrics express a longing for a genuine connection and question the intentions of a partner. The lines “How hard is it to find the one that will be real” and “Are you being true or you just playing games’ delve into the uncertainties and insecurities that can arise in a relationship. The first verse takes the listeners through Madcook’s state of mind as he confesses his weakness to the charm of the girl. Madcook’s indecision and second-guessing are scarcely difficult to miss as the track goes on.
“Raba” is a well-crafted composition that combines elements of Afrobeat and contemporary R&B. The production is polished and complements the emotional tone of the lyrics. The catchy melodies and rhythmic percussion create an infectious groove that keeps the listener engaged from start to finish. Madcook’s vocal performance is a standout aspect of the song. His smooth delivery and emotive expressions effectively convey the depth of his feelings. The heartfelt sincerity in his voice allows the listener to connect on an emotional level, enhancing the overall impact of the lyrics.

Raba is a sleek attempt by Madcook to show the fans another side of him, it showcases Madcook’s talent as a singer and songwriter. With its relatable lyrics, infectious melodies, and polished production, the track leaves a lasting impression. Madcook’s ability to combine heartfelt storytelling with infectious grooves demonstrates his versatility as an artist. “Raba” is a solid addition to Madcook’s discography and a good testament to what to expect from the Cross River-born artist in years to come.
