The Minister of State for Defence, Bello Mohammed Matawalle, has delivered two high-tech unmanned water vessels to boost surveillance and security across Nigeria’s waterways, the Arewa Good Governance Forum has said.

The presentation of the equipment took place at the Presidential Villa on 5 January 2024, signalling what the group described as “a practical step towards modernising Nigeria’s maritime defence capacity.”

In a statement made available to journalists, the Forum said Matawalle, since his appointment on 21 August 2023, had shown “focused leadership and a results-driven approach” in strengthening security operations.

According to the group, the minister has held consistent field engagements, including operational visits to frontline areas such as Sokoto, where he assured troops of the Federal Government’s commitment to curbing banditry and protecting vulnerable communities.

The statement added that Matawalle had also assessed and improved facilities at the Defence Intelligence Agency in a bid to enhance training, coordination and institutional readiness.

On international cooperation, the Forum noted that the minister had met representatives of the United States Africa Command to deepen collaboration in intelligence, logistics and training support.

The Arewa Good Governance Forum praised these steps but urged continued investment in modern equipment, welfare and oversight to guarantee lasting security across all regions.

It said, “We commend Hon. Bello Mohammed Matawalle for his visible commitment to supporting troops, expanding defence capabilities and strengthening strategic partnerships. What is now required is sustained funding, transparency and improved welfare so that citizens may truly feel secure.”

The group appealed for stronger civilian oversight and accountability in the implementation of defence reforms.
