Residents and businesses in Lagos and Aba, two major commercial cities in Nigeria, have expressed relief as the Niger Delta Power Holding Company (NDPHC) successfully restored electricity supply to two electricity distribution companies (DisCos).
The NDPHC, established during the presidency of Olusegun Obasanjo as an intervention agency to address the challenges in Nigeria’s power sector, suspended electricity supply to the Eko Electricity Distribution Company (Eko Disco) in Lagos and Aba Power DisCo. The suspension was due to issues with natural gas producers and suppliers, including Shell, ExxonMobil, and local petroleum firms.
A reliable source at the National Control Centre (NCC) in Oshogbo, Osun State, revealed that the Transmission Company of Nigeria (TCN) received a directive to resume supplying electricity to both Aba Power and Eko Disco, and it promptly complied. Stakeholders in both cities have confirmed the restoration of power.
A manufacturing firm’s CEO in Ibeju Lekki, Lagos, Ayo John Balogun, expressed delight at the resumption of power supply from Eko DisCo. He explained that self-generation is expensive for manufacturers using large power generating machines, making public power supply a more economical choice.
Chief Alphonsus Udeigbo, President General of the Aba Landlords Protection and Development Association (ALPDA), acknowledged the immediate restoration of power in Aba. He noted that various sectors, including industries, hospitality, healthcare, markets, and security agencies, were relieved to receive public power supply. Udeigbo emphasised the negative environmental impact and health risks associated with generator use.
Patrick Umeh, the Managing Director of Aba Power, praised the NDPHC for swiftly addressing the challenge and restoring power within 48 hours. He lauded the dedication and competence of NDPHC’s leadership and staff, highlighting their commitment to Nigeria’s economic and social development.
The NDPHC’s efforts in promptly addressing power supply challenges are crucial to supporting businesses and improving the quality of life for residents in these commercial hubs.
