The minister of housing and urban development, Ahmed Dangiwa, has announced plans for the introduction of the Diaspora Mortgage Housing Scheme, scheduled for launch in February 2024. This initiative is tailored to benefit Nigerians residing in the United Kingdom, United States of America, and Canada.
The revelation came during a meeting with Hon. Abike Dabiri-Erewa, Chairman of Nigerians in Diaspora Commission, and other management staff in Abuja. Recognising the substantial economic contributions of the approximately 20 million Nigerians living abroad who remit an average of over $24 billion annually, the scheme aims to provide a viable housing solution.
Dangiwa stressed the overarching objective of ensuring that Nigerians abroad have a comfortable residence in Nigeria, emphasising the Federal Housing Authority’s commitment to collaborating on the Diaspora City Project. This project, situated on a sprawling 675-hectare land in Maitama 2, is part of the tripartite mandate involving NIDCOM and FCT.
Hon. Abike Dabiri-Erewa lauded the minister’s dedication and involvement in the Diaspora Mortgage Scheme’s launch during the Nigeria Diaspora Investment Summit.
She highlighted the eagerness among Nigerians in the diaspora for both the Diaspora Mortgage Scheme and the upcoming Diaspora Smart City in Kabusa, Maitama, FCT.
