Nigeria’s Agriculture Sector Records 1.20% Growth In Q2

Latest report by the National Bureau of Statistics (NBS) shows that Nigeria’s agriculture sector grew by 1.20 per cent in the second quarter (Q2) of 2022 in real terms, lower than the 1.30 per cent growth recorded in Q2 2021.

The Q2 2022 gross domestic product (GDP) report disclosed that the figure was a decrease of 1.96 per cent from the preceding quarter (Q1 2022) which recorded a growth of 3.16 per cent.

Also, the report revealed that Nigeria’s GDP growth stood at 3.54 per cent in the second quarter of 2022 on a year-on-year basis, showing an increase of 0.44 per cent points relative to 3.11 per cent in Q1 2022.

The agriculture sector, the report added, grew by 13.83 percent year-on-year in nominal terms in Q2 2022, showing an increase of 7.47 per cent points from the same quarter of 2021.

Furthermore, the sector contributed 23.24 per cent to overall GDP in real terms in Q2 2022, lower than its contribution in the second quarter of 2021 and higher than the first quarter of 2022 which stood at 23.78 per cent and 22.36 percent respectively.

Meanwhile, crop production remained the major driver of the sector as it accounted for 91.99 per cent of the overall nominal growth of the sector in the second quarter of 2022, the report indicated.

According to the report, agriculture contributed 21.90 per cent to nominal GDP in the second quarter of 2022, lower than the rate recorded in the same period in 2021 and higher than the first quarter of 2022 which recorded 22.13 percent and 21.09 per cent respectively.

“The non-oil sector grew by 4.77 percent in real terms during the reference quarter (Q2 2022).

“This sector in the second quarter of 2022 was mainly driven by activities in the Information and Communication (Telecommunication) sector; Trade; Financial and Insurance (Financial Institutions); Transportation (Road Transport); Agriculture (Crop Production) and Manufacturing (Food, Beverage & Tobacco), all accounting for positive GDP growth.

“In real terms, the non-oil sector contributed 93.67 per cent to the nation’s GDP in the second quarter of 2022, higher than the share recorded in the second quarter of 2021 which was 92.58 per cent, and higher than the first quarter of 2022 at 93.37 per cent.

“On the broad sectoral performance, agriculture grew by 1.20 per cent during the second quarter of 2022 in real terms, lower than the second quarter of 2021 which recorded 1.30 per cent.

“The industry grew by -2.30 per cent, a decline in the figure recorded in the second quarter of 2021(-1.23 per cent),” the report read.
