Support groups aligned with the All Progressives Congress (APC) in Zamfara State have begun mobilising for the return of Dr Bello Matawalle as governor in the 2027 general elections.
The groups believe Matawalle, who currently serves as the Minister of State for Defence, has demonstrated strong leadership, particularly in addressing insecurity, and should be given another opportunity to lead the state.
Speaking on behalf of the groups, National Director General Muhammad Mansur stated that both Nigeria and Zamfara have felt safer under Matawalle’s tenure in his ministerial role.
He expressed confidence that the state would experience relief if Matawalle were to return as governor.
“We are not feeling the presence of governance under the leadership of the current governor, Dauda Lawal,” Mansur said.
“From how Honourable Minister Matawalle is handling insecurity at the national level, Zamfara will be safe under his watch if he comes back again.”
The groups have urged the APC leadership in Zamfara to support Matawalle’s return, arguing that he should be allowed to complete his tenure before others seek the position.
“We do not want anyone to contest against him,” Mansur emphasised.
“We acknowledge that it is everyone’s constitutional right to run for office, but we are appealing to the party leadership to ensure Matawalle’s return so he can continue his work before others take their turn.”
Matawalle previously served as the governor of Zamfara State before losing the seat to Dauda Lawal in the 2023 elections. His tenure was marked by efforts to tackle banditry and improve security in the state.
Supporters argue that his experience as Minister of State for Defence has further strengthened his capability to govern effectively. They believe his return would provide stability and continuity in addressing the security challenges facing Zamfara.
