The House of Representatives has passed a bill seeking to increase the salaries, allowances, and benefits of judicial office holders, with the Chief Justice of Nigeria (CJN) set to earn a minimum of N5.39 million monthly.
The bill, which passed the Third Reading in the lower chamber on Wednesday, aims to amend the Certain Political, Public and Judicial Office Holders (Salaries and Allowances, etc) Act, No. 6, 2002 (as amended) by removing Section 2(b), Part II of the Schedule to the Act, and other provisions related to Judicial Office Holders.
According to the breakdown of the bill presented by President Bola Tinubu, the CJN is entitled to an annual basic salary of N13.46 million or N1.12 million monthly. Additionally, the CJN will receive N51.16 million in annual regular allowances or N4.26 million monthly, bringing the total to approximately N5.39 million per month.
Other judicial officers, including justices of the Supreme Court and the President of the Court of Appeal, will also receive significant increases in their salaries, allowances, and benefits as outlined in the bill.
The bill further proposes various non-regular allowances, including rent, leave allowance, duty tour allowance, estacode, severance gratuity, furniture allowance, and motor vehicle loan, to be repaid before the expiration of tenure.
If passed into law, the bill will ensure improved remuneration for judicial officers across the country, aiming to enhance their welfare and efficiency in dispensing justice.
