The Nigerian Super Eagles have clinched a whopping N3 billion in prize money following their triumphant victory over the Angolan team in the ongoing African Cup of Nations (AFCON).
This victory propels them into the semi-finals of the 34th edition of AFCON, marking a significant milestone in their pursuit of glory.
The Eagles secured their lucrative N3 billion ($2.5 million) paycheck after a hard-fought 1-0 win against Angola at the Felix Houphouet Boigny Stadium in Abidjan on Friday.
As one of the last four teams standing in the competition, alongside South Africa, DR Congo, and hosts Ivory Coast, the Eagles are poised for a showdown against South Africa in the semi-finals.
Arriving in Bouake, Ivory Coast’s second-largest city, on Tuesday(today), the Eagles are gearing up under the astute guidance of coach Jose Peseiro for their clash against South Africa on Wednesday.
The substantial increase in prize money for AFCON winners was announced by Dr. Patrice Motsepe, President of the Confederation of Africa Football (CAF), before the tournament commenced.
Under the revised prize structure, the winner of the TotalEnergies AFCON Côte d’Ivoire 2023 is set to receive $7 million, marking a remarkable 40 per cent increase from previous AFCON prize money. The runner-up will be awarded $4 million, while each of the two semi-finalists, including the Super Eagles, will secure $2.5 million. The four quarter-finalists will each receive $1.3 million.
Dr. Patrice Motsepe expressed confidence that this substantial increase in prize money would catalyze the development of football across the continent, benefiting various stakeholders and supporting member associations in their administrative endeavors.
The Super Eagles’ journey to the semi-finals has been a testament to their resilience and skill. From a 1-1 draw with Equatorial Guinea to a narrow 1-0 victory against hosts Ivory Coast, the Eagles have showcased their mettle throughout the tournament.
With rigorous training sessions scheduled in Bouake, the Nigerian Football Federation is ensuring that the team is fully prepared for the upcoming semi-final encounter against South Africa.
Building on their previous successes, the Eagles are determined to secure a spot in the finals and continue their pursuit of AFCON glory.
