In a dramatic turn of events at the Godswill Akpabio International Stadium in Uyo, the Super Eagles of Nigeria saw their aspirations for the 2026 FIFA World Cup finals further complicated with a 1-1 draw against Zimbabwe yesterday.
The Nigerian squad, buoyed by a 2-0 victory over Rwanda last Friday, entered the match with high hopes. The first half, however, ended in a tense stalemate. It wasn’t until the 74th minute that star striker Victor Osimhen broke the deadlock, showcasing his prowess with a superbly executed header. The goal, set up by a precise cross from Ola Aina, ignited celebrations among the home fans as Nigeria took a much-needed lead.
However, T. Chirewa dashed their hopes in the final moments of the match, scoring an equaliser for Zimbabwe in the 90th minute. This unexpected turn left Nigerian supporters and officials alike in disappointment as their qualification path got tougher.
With this result, Nigeria finds themselves in 4th position in Group C, with seven points but trailing leaders South Africa by six points. South Africa extended their lead yesterday with a solid 2-0 win over Benin Republic in Côte d’Ivoire, bringing their total to 13 points. Rwanda and Benin Republic are currently tied with eight points, with Rwanda holding a better goal difference.
Meanwhile, Lesotho sits fifth with six points, and Zimbabwe remains at the bottom with four points after six matches.
Though four matches remain in the qualification rounds, Nigeria’s path to the World Cup has become increasingly challenging. As the competition tightens, each subsequent game will bear significant weight for the Super Eagles, whose fans and football pundits are keenly watching the unfolding drama of the qualifiers.
The road ahead promises to be an intense and thrilling ride for all teams involved, with developments eagerly anticipated by football enthusiasts worldwide.
