Nigeria’s development trajectory has been hindered by a lack of accurate and reliable data, particularly with regards to its population. It has been 19 years and counting since the last census was conducted in 2006, and the need for a new one has become increasingly urgent. A reliable population census is the foundation upon which effective development planning, policy-making, and resource allocation are built.
A census provides a comprehensive snapshot of a country’s demographic landscape, including population size, distribution, age, sex, and other vital statistics. This data is essential for informing decisions on infrastructure development, healthcare, education, economic planning, and social services. Nigeria’s rapid population growth, urbanisation, and internal migration patterns make it imperative to conduct a census to determine the current population size and structure.
The country’s estimated population of over 200 million people is based on projections from the 2006 census, which may no longer be accurate. A new census will provide a fresh baseline for planning and development. Moreover, a population census is crucial for ensuring that Nigeria meets its international commitments, such as the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).
The benefits of a timely population census extend beyond development planning. It will also help to improve resource allocation, enhance economic planning, promote good governance, and support disaster preparedness and response. Accurate population data will enable the government to allocate resources more efficiently, ensuring that areas with high population densities receive adequate funding for infrastructure, healthcare, and education.
A reliable census will provide valuable insights into the country’s labor market, consumer behavior, and economic trends, enabling policymakers to make informed decisions. It will also help to identify areas of high population growth, enabling policymakers to develop targeted strategies for addressing social, economic, and environmental challenges.
The need for a timely population census in Nigeria cannot be overstated. We urge the federal government to prioritise the conduct of a comprehensive and accurate census without delay. This will provide a solid foundation for development planning, policy-making, and resource allocation, ultimately contributing to the country’s economic growth, social progress, and improved quality of life for all Nigerians.
