The United Arab Emirates (UAE) has officially launched a two-month grace period for residency violators, allowing individuals to rectify their status without incurring financial penalties or administrative restrictions. This amnesty program, which runs from September 1 to October 31, 2024, underscores the UAE’s commitment to the values of mercy and tolerance.
The announcement was made by the Federal Authority for Identity, Citizenship, Customs, and Ports Security (ICP) through its official website. The initiative aims to support individuals who wish to remain legally in the country by providing an opportunity to amend their residency status while considering their personal circumstances.
The grace period specifically targets various groups, including individuals with expired or canceled residence permits, those who have overstayed their visas, and individuals documented for work interruptions. Foreign-born children whose guardians did not establish residency within four months of their birth are also eligible for the program.
However, not all residency violators will benefit from the amnesty. Individuals who fail to rectify their status by the end of the grace period will not qualify for the program’s benefits. Those documented for work interruptions must resolve their status before the start of the grace period, and cases involving deportation are excluded.
The statement said eligible individuals will be exempt from financial penalties related to illegal stays or other violations, and those who settle their status during this period will not face re-entry bans, facilitating a smoother transition for those seeking to rectify their residency situations.
Applications can be submitted electronically or through approved printing offices, ensuring accessibility for all. The registration process will remain open 24/7 via e-channels, while service center hours will be extended until 8:00 PM to accommodate applicants.
The initiative also provides guidance for employers and workers. Employers wishing to change the status of a violating worker can either cancel the work permit or report work abandonment through the Ministry of Human Resources and Emiratisation channels. Workers looking to join a new employer must have the new employer apply for a work permit. Additionally, those planning to leave the country must obtain an exit permit through the appropriate authority.
