Minister of Works, David Umahi, has refuted allegations by Tracka BudgIT that funds allocated for road construction were improperly deposited in FIMS Microfinance Bank.
The press release by Tracka claimed that N8.7 billion out of N9.3 billion disbursed by the Ministry of Works for 62 projects from June to December 2023 was allocated for road projects and deposited in the microfinance bank.
Umahi clarified during an inspection of a road project in Rivers State that Tracka BudgIT’s claims were misleading. He explained that as he was in the Senate from June to August 20, 2023, and only became a minister later, he couldn’t have authorized payments to the Microfinance Bank during that period. Umahi dismissed the report as a distraction, emphasizing the need to focus on the quality of work done by contractors rather than the bank where they deposit funds after project completion.
The minister maintained his commitment to President Tinubu’s Renewed Hope Agenda for the development of the road sector in Nigeria.
