The West African Examinations Council (WAEC) has dismissed reports circulating online alleging that schools have been directed to limit subject choices for candidates sitting the 2026 West African Senior School Certificate Examination (WASSCE).
In a statement on Tuesday, the Acting Head of Public Affairs, Mrs. Moyosola Adeshina, urged schools, parents, and students to disregard what she described as misleading information not issued by the Council.
“The Council wishes to categorically distance itself from this unfounded assumption. No directive restricting students’ subject choices for the 2026 WASSCE has been issued,” she stated.
Adeshina clarified that curriculum development and regulation for Nigerian schools remain the sole responsibility of the Federal Government, while WAEC’s mandate is strictly to assess and implement officially approved educational policies.
“As a law-abiding organisation, WAEC operates within the legal and operational frameworks of its host country. Curriculum changes must follow government-approved procedures,” she explained.
She further noted that WAEC cannot unilaterally introduce, amend, or remove any subject from the examination structure, stressing that such modifications require extensive stakeholder engagement led by the Federal Ministry of Education.
“The introduction or modification of any curriculum is not arbitrary. WAEC only assesses based on government-approved syllabuses,” she said.
Adeshina also assured candidates that clear guidelines for the 2026 examination exercise will be communicated through the Council’s official website and credible media platforms.
“We remain committed to professionalism, transparency, and excellence in the service of the Nigerian child. No student will be unfairly treated or disadvantaged,” she added.
She reaffirmed WAEC’s commitment to providing equal examination opportunities for every candidate, insisting the Council remains a reliable and trustworthy examining body in Nigeria.
