Zamfara Group Slams Governor Dauda For Reckless Borrowing 28bn In Just Nine Months

A civic group, Zamfara Good Governance, has accused Governor Dauda Lawal Dare of plunging the state into what it described as “reckless borrowing” amounting to ₦28bn in just nine months.

The group, in a statement by its spokesperson, Dr Ibrahim Yahaya Gusau, on Tuesday, said the figure was reported by The Punch and warned that the governor must be held accountable.

Gusau said it was disturbing that despite Zamfara receiving huge federal allocations every month, there was little to show on the ground in terms of infrastructure, healthcare, or education.

According to him, residents are still grappling with hunger and insecurity while the administration continues to pile up debts.

He said, “Borrowing ₦28bn in less than a year, while ordinary citizens wallow in poverty and banditry continues unchecked, is not only irresponsible but also a dangerous mortgage on the future of Zamfara.”

The group alleged that the government had failed to provide tangible results or clear explanations for the loans, describing the situation as unacceptable.

“The people of Zamfara deserve transparency, accountability, and responsible governance. They deserve to know how every naira borrowed or allocated is being spent,” Gusau added.

It urged Governor Dare to publish details of how the loans and federal allocations were utilised, stressing that the future of the state “must not be traded away for reckless spending and political grandstanding.”
