The Association of Youth Concerns of Zamfara State has publicly appealed for the return of former Governor Dr. Bello Matawalle in the 2027 gubernatorial race, citing neglect under the administration of current Governor Dauda Lawal.

The call was made in a statement signed by the association’s secretary, Ibrahim Muhammad Gusau, and distributed to the media in Gusau on Saturday.

The association highlighted the stark contrast between the current administration and Matawalle’s tenure, describing the former governor as a “leader, mentor, and visionary” whose policies transformed youth involvement in the state.

The statement noted that under Matawalle’s administration, over 8,000 young people were appointed to government roles, including 2,033 Special Assistants SA, 5,532 Senior Special Assistant SSA, 300 director general DG, 198 permanent commissioners/ permanent members 90 Special advisers, 28 commissioners and hundreds of additional positions

“We call upon Dr. Bello Matawalle to hear our cries and return to lead us once again in 2027,” said the statement, emphasizing the group’s desire for leadership that will restore “stability, prosperity, and opportunities” to the youth of Zamfara.

“This wasn’t just about numbers,” the statement continued, adding that Matawalle empowered youths by entrusting them with responsibilities that contributed to both their personal growth and the state’s development.

The association also credited Matawalle with addressing security issues through dialogue between Fulani and Hausa communities, creating nine months of peace in his first year, and curbing illegal mining to reduce conflicts.

Under the current administration, however, the association claims youth representation has dropped to approximately five percent, with unmet promises on empowerment and support.

They cited unpaid school fees and a general feeling of neglect among young people.

“We speak not only as individuals but as a collective of youths who feel the absence of a leader,” the statement said.
