In a significant development, President Bola Tinubu has formally submitted a list of nominees to the Senate for the screening and confirmation of individuals proposed as directors of the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) board.

The announcement came during Tuesday’s plenary session, where a letter from Tinubu to Senate President Godswill Akpabio was read aloud.

The letter stated, “In compliance with the provisions of Section 6, subsection 1b and section 10 subsection 1 and 2 of the Central Bank of Nigeria Establishment Act, 2007, I am pleased to present for confirmation by the Senate, the appointment of the under-listed five persons as Directors of the Board of Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN). Robert Agbide, Ado Wanga, Muritala Sagaley, Urom Eke, and Olayinka Aliyu.”

Tinubu’s communication underscored adherence to statutory mandates and emphasized the significance of the nominees’ roles in the governance of Nigeria’s financial regulatory body.

Responding to Tinubu’s request, Senate President Akpabio acknowledged the importance of the nominations and promptly referred the matter to the Senate Committee on Banking, Insurance, and Other Financial Institutions. Akpabio stated, “The committee is tasked with reporting back to plenary within four weeks.”

Akpabio’s directive signals the Senate’s commitment to thorough legislative scrutiny and due diligence in vetting the nominees before their formal confirmation.

Additionally, Tinubu sought Senate confirmation for Mr. Hamidu Rahim as Commissioner for the National Population Commission (NPC), representing Osun State.

This request aligns with constitutional provisions and underscores Tinubu’s commitment to ensuring competent leadership in critical government agencies.

Acknowledging the significance of Rahim’s nomination, Akpabio referred the matter to the Senate Committee on National Population and National Identity for further legislative deliberation. Akpabio stated, “The committee is instructed to report back to plenary within one week.”
