PenCom Unveils Pension 2.0 To Deepen Inclusion, Modernise Retirement Administration

The National Pension Commission (PenCom) has reaffirmed its commitment to a revolutionary approach to pension administration through innovation, inclusion, and integrity.

Director-General of PenCom, Omolola Oloworaran, stated this during the 2025 Customer Service Week celebration held in Abuja, themed “Mission Possible.” Represented by the Acting Commissioner, Inspectorate, Mr. Samuel Uwandu, Oloworaran said the commission’s focus is on building a transparent, technology-driven pension system that guarantees every Nigerian a secure and dignified retirement.

She noted that PenCom’s new phase, known as Pension 2.0, reflects a bold step toward modernising the industry, with initiatives designed to make pensions more accessible, flexible, and inclusive.

Among the recent reforms is the Guideline on Retirement Savings Accounts in Foreign Currency, which enables Nigerians in foreign employment or the diaspora to participate in the Contributory Pension Scheme (CPS). The commission also introduced the Personal Pension Plan (PPP) to extend coverage to self-employed and informal sector workers, breaking long-standing barriers to financial inclusion.

To ensure wider adoption, Oloworaran said accredited pension agents will market and sell the PPP nationwide, bringing pension services closer to underserved communities. She added that the commission had also issued revised Corporate Governance Guidelines for Licensed Pension Fund Operators (LPFOs) to enhance accountability, transparency, and ethical standards in the industry.

Oloworaran emphasised that these initiatives align with PenCom’s vision to sustain efficiency, transparency, and responsiveness in service delivery. “Behind every reform is a story of individuals who have entrusted their future to the pension system. Our duty is to justify that trust,” she said.

The Desk Officer, SERVICOM, Mr. Duruba Sesugh, explained that the Customer Service Week, observed annually in the first week of October, celebrates the dedication of employees and retirees. He described this year’s theme, “Mission Possible,” as a reflection of the commission’s determination to deliver world-class service and uphold the trust of contributors.
